Mobile Apps proliferation in the Corporates

Once mostly forbidden by IT, smartphones are now being used by hundreds of millions of employees throughout the world to access corporate information to keep up in today’s 24/7 business world.

Symantec survey on Mobile Apps shows that we have reached a tipping point in the business use of mobile devices. Most organizations are making line-of-business application available. They are also developing custom applications, and even making plans to create corporate app stores for employees to download approved software.

All this points to the goal of improving corporate agility. Businesses want to improve efficiency and increase workplace effectiveness, as well as get things done quicker, and mobility offers them the chance to do that.

But there’s a price. Organizations are aware of the potential dangers mobility can pose, rating it highest among IT initiatives in risk. They’re worried about losing devices, data loss and malware infecting the corporate network through smartphones and tablets.

Here are some of the survey findings :-

Tipping point in mobility adoption

Mobile initiatives significantly impacting IT resources

Mobile risks impacting organization

Key Recommendations

As organizations work to realize the competitive advantage offered through the adoption of mobile computing, Symantec offers the following recommendations to improve the effectiveness of mobile initiatives:

• Enable broadly. Mobility offers tremendous opportunities for organizations of all sizes. Explore how you can take advantage of mobility and develop a phased approach to build an ecosystem that supports your plan. To get the most from mobile advances, plan for line-of-business mobile applications that have mainstream use. Employees will use mobile devices for business one way or another – make it on your terms.

• Think strategically. Build a realistic assessment of the ultimate scale of your mobile business plan and its impact on your infrastructure. Think beyond email. Explore all of the mobile opportunities that can be introduced and understand the risks and threats that need to be mitigated. As you plan, take a cross-functional approach to securing sensitive data no matter where it might end up.

• Manage efficiently. Mobile devices are legitimate endpoints that require the same attention given to traditional PCs. Many of the processes, policies, education and technologies that are leveraged for desktops and laptops are also applicable to mobile platforms. So the management of mobile devices should be integrated into the overall IT management framework and administered in the same way – ideally using compatible solutions and unified policies. This creates operational efficiencies and lowers the total cost of ownership

Enforce Appropriately. As more employees connect their personal devices to the corporate network, organizations need to modify their acceptable usage policies to accommodate both corporate-owned and personally-owned devices. Management and security levers will need to differ based on ownership of the device and the associated controls that the organization requires. Employees will continue to add devices to the corporate network to make their jobs more efficient and enjoyable so organizations must plan for this legally, operationally and culturally.

• Secure comprehensively. Look beyond basic password, wipe and application blocking policies. Focus on the information and where it is viewed, transmitted and stored. Integrating with existing data loss prevention, encryption and authentication policies will ensure consistent corporate and regulatory compliance.

Some random thoughts on Cloud Computing …

Why an Indian CIO prefers Private Cloud over the Public Cloud ?

Most of the Indian Companies are family-owned, a scenario where there is a little scope of independent decision-making by its Employees.

As a result an Indian CIO also works with a closed mindset.

This situation makes Indian CIOs dislike the concept of public cloud where they feel that they will lose the control of the Application systems and the Data there-in once they migrate to a public cloud.

Indian CIOs prefer to adopt new technologies like cloud computing as it makes business sense and brings in efficiency & agility in the overall business process.

But at the same time, they prefer a private cloud model as they are unwilling to give away the control.

Countries like USA, Singapore are 2-3 years ahead of India in terms of openness towards public Cloud adoption.

Indian CIOs will try private clouds first. It will take some time for the Indian CIOs to become as free-thinking as their counterparts in USA, Singapore etc.

Above mentioned does not mean that Security Concerns of Indian CIOs are all a Hype or a Myth.

Today each and every vendor is busy into deciding – which share of cloud computing pie they can use to capitalize on it.

Many a times it happens that a cloud vendor overlooks security issues.

Data leakage, loss of data visibility and unauthorized access to data can happen if security mechanisms are not in place. (Refer to the article published on http://ow.ly/4r2rB).

Our fore-fathers used to keep their hard-earned money buried deep in the backyard. But today’s generation feel more secured to keep money in a bank rather than in-house.

It’s all a matter of trust.

To conclude, Security may be a Cloud Inhibitor today. But the implementation of standards and processes will make Security as the Cloud Enabler.

A distinction between online and offline social life !!!

On the internet today, Social is a new Buzzword .

Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, Blogs, etc are the channels to socialize online on the internet .

A well known social media consultant says, “People start off with email and instant messaging, move on to Orkut and graduate to Facebook. If they’re really hooked, they make the leap to Twitter” .

Back in 2004, with the launch of Orkut, the entire social networking era came up in India.

Students and young professionals were seen hooked for hours on to this exciting socializing platform.

At that time there was no other major socializing platform available on the net.

I came in touch with Orkut during Feb ’06.

The power of Orkut’s social platform :- within just few months, I was able to establish contact with most my childhood school friends settled across the geographies for studies and other purposes, which otherwise could not have been possible.

I myself was studying my engineering at Ahmedabad ( a city in Gujarat, India ) , at that time.

I can say Orkut was really powerful in making me establish the contact with my friends.

Ok, so now coming back to the main question – distinction between online and offline social life ???

Today, there is very little distinction between online and offline worlds.

When you become really good friend with someone online, the most natural progression of that relationship is to take it offline.

So, today online and real worlds are NOT mutually exclusive.

This is because social networking sites facilitate real-world connections.

People use them to connect with other people, share thoughts, plan events and upload photos in a manner that is very much real – it just tends to be more efficient than writing letters or sending snaps.

Yesterday, while I was brushing up my Java skills, I was also following tweets being broadcast LIVE by the organizers of a Cloud Computing workshop at a hotel in Mumbai.

In between, I was asking queries to the speaker, and they were answered in real-time on twitter within few minutes itself.

I felt as if I was actively taking part in that Cloud Workshop just by following them LIVE on twitter.

So, in a way socializing online is good.

It helps you connect with thousands of people online ….

But, you need to be careful.

Can you trust strangers on the internet ? ??

That’s still a big problem prevailing today, although twitter uses a concept of Verified Account for celebrities at least !!!

Today, we are becoming increasingly social on the net with the advent of smart phones and the necessary infrastructure.

Millions of tweets come from the smart phone users on the move as online status or location updates !!!

So is this the future ? Have we arrived ? And if we have, then what is the road ahead ?

A few years ago, the focus was on how to get connected.

Now we are so densely connected that we are just a series of dots over the globe .

Some experts feels that going ahead, the internet is going to have an increasingly personal relevance.

Its all going to be about I, Me, Myself, about my interests, connections, contacts, photos, videos, communities .

Also privacy will be a big concern in the coming years as people become increasingly choosy about what to share online and with whom.

Today, We’re struggling to think of someone who is NOT on Facebook, Orkut or Twitter.

Today NOT having a Facebook or Twitter account is viewed like NOT having a cell phone connection !!!

Your comments are welcomed !!!

Is the internet taking over our lives ?? A big question-mark !

My laptop indicates that temperature outside is 36 °C

Its cool to write a blog on this hot sunny afternoon here at Mumbai.

Internet !!!!!!!!!

Is internet taking on our lives ??

Lets think …

What people do online ….

They Email, Chat, Google search, Socialize, Read blogs, Watch youtubes, and download a variety of other stuffs on their desktops, laptops, netbooks, palmtops, tablets, smart phones.

Whether it is conducting some online bank transactions, paying monthly bills, booking travel and movie tickets or ordering digital photo prints and other purchases, The Net is playing a bigger and bigger role in our daily lives !!!

On the internet, SOCIAL today is the new buzzword !!

Statistics show that about 57 % of all internet users have joined a social network making it a leading platform for creating and sharing content.

The enablers of these are Email, Chat, Orkut, Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and the list goes on and on and on !!!

Someone has rightly said that -

“ People start with Email and Messaging , Move on to Orkut and graduate to Facebook or Twitter or directly land up into the blogosphere !!

Lets examine the internet socializing scenario prevailing today .

To simply put into other words, lets examine the internet socializing addiction prevailing among todays generation

@breakfast

Morning coffee and Facebook notification on its auroma

Morning coffee and Facebook notification on its auroma

A healthy breakfast is boiled eggs, sandwiches, or a low-cal salad with a dash of tweets thrown in .

If you are a smartphone user hooked to the web, I bet you associate the aroma of morning coffee with a facebook notification

Socializing on the Way to Work

Socializing on the Way to Work

Living in a metro ? On your way to work in a subway or a bus or any other public transport ?

Take a look around you next time and I am sure you will find dozens of people hanging away on their facebooks via their blackberries, iPhone or any other smartphones !

They have one eye on twitter and one eye on the road !!!!!!!!

@ in the office

Smartphones in offices

Smartphones in offices

Firewalls are smart .. but employees are much smarter.

Chats, orkuts, facebooks and personal emails blocked at work ?

No Problem – What are smarphones for ?

ADDICTED ??

  1. when i wake up in the morning, my first impulse is to reach for my phone/switch on my Computer.
  2. I switch on the computer intending to get some work done but instead end up spending hours socializing on the Net
  3. i find it comforting to get away from the world and go onto the internet to look at completely random things.
  4. I spend more than 5 hours a day online on non-work related activity
  5. when i am away from my phone or my computer longer than a day, i feel uneasy, irritated and get mood swings

If you answered Yes to 2 or more of the above statements, maybe it’s time you logged off for a bit.

Sit back, relax and throw open a window or two – there’s a whole world out there to enjoy and live !!

Its evening now !!

my lappy indicates that its evening time and temperature outside has dropped to 28 °C and the climate is windy.

Its Log Out time for me ..

Let me have a hot cup of coffee to freshen up my mind for a cool evening.

You can often find me at the various Cafes in mumbai working on my IBM Thinkpad along with a sip of coffee to survive !

Yes, I too agree that i am a little bit of internet addict !!

Fedora 12 has Empathy IM client #fedora #empathy #linux

Hi folks ….

Today m gonna talk about Empathy IM client included in the latest Fedora 12

  • Empathy is the multi protocol IM client supporting various protocols like XMPP ( Jabber ), Yahoo, Gtalk, Live (MSN), MySpace, and many other platforms.
  • For detailed list of supported protocol features visit  http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/wiki/Protocols_Support
  • File transfer for XMPP, and local networks.
  • Voice and video call using SIP, XMPP, Google Talk and MSN.
  • Sharing and viewing location information.
  • Private and group chat (with smileys and spell checking).
  • Conversation logging.
  • Automatic away and extended away presence.
  • Automatic reconnection using Network Manager.

The most attractive feature of Empathy IM is Conversation theming

For example,  the theme used by me in the below screenshot is  ”Adium Matte”

It simulates Apple iChat’s bubbles while chatting ….

Similarly you can find a lot many themes to download at :-

http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=search&cat_id=5&sort=ranking&user_id=0&s=&start=0

The question is to find an easy way to download as well as  install these themes.

Well, I used the following route :-

  • There is a convenient shell script for downloading and installing themes from adiumxtras.
  • Visit http://gist.github.com/191499 andclick download button.
  • Save it at a convenient location. ( the name of the shell script will be ” adiumxtra-install ”  )
  • Now visit http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=search&cat_id=5&sort=ranking&user_id=0&s=&start=0
  • Choose your favorite theme.
  • Move the mouse pointer on the file size under “Install” ( Don’t click the file size )
  • Copy the link address
  • Now open up a shell ( command prompt ).
  • Navigate to the directory where you have saved the shell script ” adiumxtra-install “ downloaded earlier.
  • Type ‘  adiumxtra-install <The link address you have copied>
  • For example ‘ adiumxtra-install adiumxtra://www.adiumxtras.com/download/2160 ‘ will download and install “Adium Matte” ( seen in the above screenshot ).
  • Now when you open up Empathy, under Edit, go to Preferences, and click the Themes tab
  • Under the drop down list, you will see your newly installed theme !!!!!

There are a number of themes at http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=search&cat_id=5&sort=ranking&user_id=0&s=&start=0

The ” adium matte ”  theme seen in the above screenshot is available at  http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=search&s=adium+matte

You name it and Empathy has got it !!!

Do rate my post and give your wonderful comments !!!
